Dating after divorce

Getting back up on the horse

Dating after divorce is a difficult subject for most people to face. You may be overcome by a feeling of, “What’s the point?” It’s easy to get into this mindset after a divorce, feeling that any attempt at a relationship will only end up the same way as your marriage. The first step is to take a step back and treat dating less seriously. You’re just going to go out and have some fun – there’s no big commitment here. It’s about recapturing some of the youthful joy that dating held when you were a teenager.

While it’s impossible to drop all your emotional baggage, getting back into the dating scene will help tremendously with the healing process. It can be easy to think of dating as an intimidating thing after a divorce. After all, you have probably just spent years without having to even think about dating. You haven’t had to worry about the prospect of ‘finding someone’ all over again. But try to look on the bright side here. You now have the opportunity to have new experiences and meet new people, indulging in things you never could have done while you were married. Approach dating after divorce with this attitude and you will radiate a much more positive personality, and this will show through on your dates.

If you’ve been married for any length of time, you may find the dating scene has changed somewhat. Don’t stress – dating has actually gotten easier. Innovations like internet dating and speed dating have made the process of finding a match quicker and simpler than ever before, so don’t be afraid to try something new.

Internet dating has a bit of a bad rap because it’s a popular option for the terminally loveless and people who ‘have something wrong with them,’ but there are still plenty of diamonds among the rough if you are willing to ignore the stigma and take a look. Many online daters are just like you – perfectly normal people who had a marriage that, for whatever reason, didn’t work out. Dating another divorcee means that a lot of awkwardness will be avoided, as you are both in the same boat and understand the emotions involved.

However, you should try to avoid talking about your ex on a date as much as possible. Don’t bring your baggage to the dinner table. More specifically, don’t say negative things about your ex no matter how horrible they may have been to you. The way you talk about your ex gives your date an indication of the way you may one day talk about them – so if you say anything at all along these lines, keep it above the belt. But even saying nice things about a former partner is a little rude when you’re supposed to be learning about a new potential companion, especially if you keep droning on about it. As a general rule only get into this topic of conversation if your date specifically brings it up.

Speed dating is a form of dating where you have a series of very short dates (usually around three minutes each) in quick succession. At the end of your dating session you decide who you would like to see again. If they feel the same, you exchange contact details. Not only does this method save time, it eliminates a lot of the pretence involved with going out on a more traditional ‘dinner and movie’ style date. If you don’t like the person, you aren’t stuck with them for three hours making chit chat. It also helps you avoid any real face-to-face rejections on either side, which is good for the ego when you’re just getting back into dating after divorce.

Even with the options available, of course, you should never rule yourself out as being ‘too old for the bar scene.’ There are plenty of older people out if you go to the right bars, and there are also plenty of younger people of both sexes who prefer an older partner. Wherever you go looking, it’s important that you take that first step and get started on in the process of dating after divorce and finding the love you deserve.
